the crowing hen

my life as a farmer

about

After surviving years in cities and suburbs in Europe, I am finally home in Maine and am indulging in all those delayed daydreams of having a homestead. My goal is not only to increase my family’s self-sufficiency while treating the animals who provide us with food in a humane and respectful manner, but to also promote the heritage breeds that have been nearly abandoned as people choose faster-maturing, cheaper hybridized stock. We began with a small flock of Blue Lace Red Wyandottes that actually came when I called them. Unfortunately, my hopes of free-ranging the flock were cut short when nearby nesting bald eagles wiped out all but a lone pullet. I attempted to replace the flock with more BLRWs, but wound up with a bunch of roosters that I’d been assured were all young pullets. ;)

A year down the road, my little farmette is now home to rare/heritage chicken breeds including Delawares, Barnevelders, Welsummers, Barred Rocks, and several others – including, of course, those Blue Lace Red Wyandottes that started it all. In addition, there are three lovely and loving Pilgrim geese, two Black ducks, three Pekin ducks, several Guinea fowl, three Silver Fox rabbits, three Nigerian Dwarf does and one very naughty but irresistible Nubian doeling. It’s a noisy, chaotic, and wonderful place to be and I’m thrilled to be part of this craziness. My first season of breeding chickens went remarkably well,  and I hope to improve further upon it when spring returns to this section of the world.
